YOTA Contest 2022

We are happy to announce that we will have three (3) more YOTA Contest sessions coming up in 2022 again. Lots of participants enjoyed the 2021 sessions already and thus we hope to get even more people involved into the events this year.

The upcoming three sessions will be taking place on the following days:

 

1st round | 21st May 2022 | 0800 – 1959 UTC

2nd round | 23rd July 2022 | 1000 – 2159 UTC

3rd round | 30th December 2022 | 1200 – 2359 UTC

 

So, are you ready to compete within the next YOTA Contest? Everyone in the ham radio community can take part, it takes place three times per year and only lasts 12 hours. Its aim is to increase the youngsters’ activity on the air, strengthening the reputation of the YOTA program and demonstrate the support for youngsters across the world.

We have implemented 8 different categories which also include special ones for youngsters (≤ 25 years old) only. Covering the 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m bands the competition will take place in CW and SSB modes.

The contest exchange used will be the age of the participating operators. Different ages also serve as multipliers during the contest.

Contacts between the own continent are worth 1 point, working DX is worth 3 points but the most points will be achieved by working youngsters. The younger the operator the more points one will get for the QSO.

During the past year we have received several rule translations into various languages. A big thank you to the contributors! So, if you are not that fluent in English, check them out here.

The Annual School Club EU – Day on May 5th every year

Introduction The annual School Club EU – Day activity on May 5th is supposed to bring contacts with and among school amateur radio club and training stations and school girls and boys with own callsigns as well as contacts with every other station from all over Europe (WAE list).  The activity is a great way to get young operators on the air from their school shacks using their training call signs (or the school club’s call sign for irrelevant messages only – according to national law). Very often a new operator will be intimidated by the fear of not knowing what to say to the stranger on the other side of the radio. The exchange of information helps to overcome this fear in a low pressure contest format, it should not be made a “5-9-contest”, though. Operators are encouraged to take more time to chat beyond the exchange of the necessary details. A certificate of participation will be issued for stations that send an excerpt from the log of the day. There is also the chance of winning one of the fantastic prizes issued by AATiS.

YOTA Contest Final Scores + Next Round 30th December 2021

The second YOTA Contest already took place in July and was a big success again. Almost 100 YOTA logs, where operators have to be ≤ 25 years old, and over 500 logs in total were received within the deadline. Our team has worked hard to get the final scores ready before the start of the third session. The final scores including public logs can now be viewed on the YOTA Contest website.

Congratulations to our winners of each category of this second round of YOTA Contest!

The upcoming third session will be taking place next week already. The date will be Thursday, 30th December from 1200 – 2359 UTC.
Thus, this date will be within the ongoing December YOTA Month (DYM) activity and we expect lots of YOTA stations on the air!

December YOTA Month – DYM Activity 2021

The entire month of December, several youngsters under the age of 26 will become active with YOTA suffixes in their callsigns. The idea behind this is to show the amateur radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham radio waves.

Normally, YOTA stations are active throughout the year from YOTA summer and subregional camps. This year, however, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, all scheduled camps and other in-person events had to be cancelled again. As a result, there were only few opportunities to hear YOTA stations on the bands.

Hence, we as Team YOTA want to show the world that the youngsters still want and can be active on the bands during this difficult time. Help your local youngsters to get on the air throughout the December YOTA Month following your national health guidelines. Either you are a supporting elmer or under 26 years yourself, contact your society’s youth coordinator to be active with your national YOTA callsign. If your society did not apply for one yet, feel free to encourage them to do so of course. It will be a pleasure to work a lot of new youngsters on the bands!

Every ham radio operator can support the youth worldwide! By making a QSO with them, they can improve their skills on air and learn more about geography and ham radio abbreviations, among others. The youngsters will be happy to get some attention and exchange information. Licensed and unlicensed youth will be making QSOs, be aware this could be their first radio contact ever and give them a chance to experience a possible new hobby.

As every year, there is again an award program available. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award for free. This program promotes the radio activity on the air waves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Last year we had high hopes with the QSO goal of 130.000 QSOs. With the help of our global youngsters within amateur radio, we absolutely crushed the goal with nearly 138.000 QSOs achieved by 46 stations. This year we are aiming for the same target. So, participate in December YOTA Month, and help us to achieve this goal again in December 2021!

CQWW introduces new Youth Overlays

CQWW committee stated earlier that:

1) We have created a new YOUTH overlay that will be available to all competitors who are 25 years old or under, effective on the dates of the contest. The Cabrillo overlay format will be CATEGORY-OVERLAY: YOUTH. In support of this change, Youth overlay entries will be highlighted in the results (as is currently done for Classic and Rookies). In addition, plaques will be available for the winners.

These changes will apply in SSB and CW parts of CQWW from 2021!

We are also proud to announce that several IARU Youth Working Groups, YOTA Teams and individuals worldwide will sponsor the accompanying plaques for this new YOUTH overlay.

Train the Trainer report – Finland – July 2021

The July Train the Trainer reports focus on sharing ideas for activities, as well as organizing activities after covid.  Answers in this particular report are by the Youth Coordinator of Team Finland.

How do you think COVID will change the way you organize youth activities after it is gone?

We are much more likely to organize online events even after covid because they are easily accessible for everyone and much easier to organize even with small resources. Even though online events are fun, we can’t wait to meet people again and organize in-person gatherings for youngsters!

 

Are you willing to organize in-person activities again, when COVID is gone? What kind of activities?

We are currently planning for a weekend camp for September and December. 

 

During COVID, have you come up with any new creative ways to advertise our common hobby or organize activities?

We started writing in our national societies newsletter and we had a webinar about youth activities in Finland. The newsletter is a great way to reach out to people directly. 

We have also done some refreshing to our page on SRAL’s website, so it would be more informative and welcoming for new youngsters. We have added videos, graphics, and social media to our website to appeal to newcomers. 

 

What are your plans regarding youth work in your country for the summer?

We are trying to keep our chat groups active, do more social media and participate in our society’s events. 

During the pandemic, we have also started many new interesting projects to support youngsters in this hobby. We are planning to do more cooperation with scouts and clubs. There are a lot of potential youngsters that are either interested in ham radio or already part of it. Our goal is to have every youngster in Finland in our reach.

Train the Trainer report – Norway – July 2021

The July Train the Trainer reports focus on sharing ideas for activities, as well as organizing activities after covid.  Answers in this particular report are by the Youth Coordinator of Team Norway.

How do you think COVID will change the way you organize youth activities after it is gone?

Probably not very much, but we will at least remember that an epidemic outbreak is a possibility, and plan accordingly.

Are you willing to organize in-person activities again, when COVID is gone? What kind of activities?

Yes. Not sure which.

What are your plans regarding youth work in your country for the summer?

We have gotten a grant from the Research Council of Norway to create a digital learning platform for the amateur radio license, and also create amateur radio activities for youth in Norway. We will start work on planning this during the summer, but there is still a long way to go until we are finished, of course.

Train the Trainer report – Estonia – July 2021

How do you think COVID will change the way you organize youth activities after it is gone?

Well it has already had an affect. As of 2021 we had first online lessons and possibility to take an exam online. That first tryout gave us 22 new callsigns of whom about 33% were youngsters. Strange or not they actually had to put some effort themselves to find us, as we did not have any public posts about taking an online exam. It shows that those who find us, are actually interested.

Are you willing to organize in-person activities again, when COVID is gone? What kind of activities?

We will keep doing what we always do, if the possibility comes. It has been a bit tricky to organize everything. But recent months has shown some promising covid numbers, which also allowed us to have our annual ES-Hamfest. During the hamfest we were able to gather all the youngsters across the country. That gave everyone the opportunity to compete to each other, spend some time together and of course learn from the elders.

During COVID, have you come up with any new creative ways to advertise our common hobby or organize activities?

Nothing fancy, just possibility to take online lessons and online exams.

What are your plans regarding youth work in your country for the summer?

We don’t have anything exact planned. But we’re hoping to have our youth only contest weekend at the end of August.

Train the Trainer report – Cyprus – July 2021

The July Train the Trainer reports focus on sharing ideas for activities, as well as organizing activities after covid.  Answers in this particular report are by the Youth Coordinator of Team Cyprus.

How do you think COVID will change the way you organize youth activities after it is gone?

We can be more versatile and hybrid in having a meeting or an activity. if we are going to have a weekly meeting some can be on site and others can be via web call etc. Or We can set up remote stations and people can operate remotely.

Are you willing to organize in-person activities again, when COVID is gone? What kind of activities?

Yes Of course, We would like to organize some POTA,SOTA events. In Person meeting to do some QSOs together and exchange ideas

During COVID, have you come up with any new creative ways to advertise our common hobby or organize activities?

Unfortunately COVID hit us hard. Due to the restrictions we couldn’t promote our hobby very much. Although we have our weekly meetings online and people from all over the island can communicate now.

What are your plans regarding youth work in your country for the summer?

We will do a Lighthouse activation. We will have some young people and newcomers to join us to experience the activity. We have in the works to do a fox hunt again or a POTA possibly.
