Train the Trainer report – Lithuania – July 2020

By | Publication, Train the trainer | No Comments

ACTIVITIES DURING AND AFTER QUARANTINE

  • Annual Lithuanian Cup contest took place just as it normally would. Although there were a lot more youngsters, compared to previous years, that worked on-site.
  • More hams finished their QO-100 set-ups and can now do QSOs.
  • New DMR hotspot in city Šiauliai that has many VHF/UHF/SHF loving radio amateurs.
  • Several groups of radio amateurs expressed their desire to organize local mini hamfests this summer.

PLANS FOR 5 YEARS

  1. Make young people more aware of amateur radio by getting them to interact with it by hosting events directed at young people. We already have some events that require no knowledge of amateur radio to participate and you try out many ham radio activities. This could hopefully attract more youngsters into amateur radio hobby.
  2. Help hams or clubs obtain QO-100 set-ups. We can already see better equipment, designed for this purpose and at a lower price, emerge from the chinese market.
  3. Overcome some minor newly introduced station registration rules to allow for easier station operation.
  4. Make local amateur radio chat/email conference pages more youngster friendly and attempt to move to a more modern platform.

This will be followed by a Q&A session with the group presenting. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle amongst all participants.

WHERE WILL IT BE HELD?

We will be streaming live again on our Youtube, Facebook and Twitch channels. Furthermore, we try to stream via the QO-100 geostationary satellite in DATV mode again.

You could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location, and favorite color.
Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day”.

By | Publication, YOTA online | No Comments

Press Release by Youngsters On The Air
Monday, 08.06.2020

A huge thanks to everyone watching the first YOTA online session on Thursday, 28.05.2020.
The successful session gathered more than 600 unique viewers from all continents except Oceania and Antarctica, as far as we could track. Considering this we can say that the event was indeed taking place worldwide. The session was streamed live on Facebook and YouTube. For the first time ever, we have been streaming on Twitch as well. Therefore, it was a great success with a total of 30 unique viewers on this new platform bearing in mind that this was our first time using it. We also had the opportunity to stream via the Es-Hail QO-100 geostationary satellite from a QTH in Belgium using ATV mode where we received good reports as well.

The event itself begun at 1800 UTC on all platforms. After a warm welcome and a short explanation of the significance of the event, we headed over to our main topic of the day, Youth Contest Program, also known as YCP. Claudia DC2CL and Tom F4HWS, as participants of the events at LX7I and DM9EE, had talked about the program itself and answered audience questions afterwards.  Later general follower questions regarding different YOTA related topics were answered by the members of the working group. After about an hour later at 1900 UTC the night was sealed with a YOTA merchandise prize draw which was attended by around 70 people. With this first YOTA online session came to a very successful end.

If you didn’t have the chance to join the live event or just want to see all of it again, you can re-watch the recording of the event on our Youtube channel.

The YOTA online event was created by a multinational team consisting of nine people from six countries: Monty OE3VVU from Austria, Pieter ON1GPS from Belgium, Martina OK2YLQ from Czech Republic, Otava OH3OT from Finland, Claudia DC2CL, Philipp DK6SP & Markus DL8GM from Germany and Lisa PA2LS from the Netherlands.

Dozens of hours of planning were used, and several team calls were held to make the free YOTA broadcast available to everybody all over the world.

For all of those who watched the event either live or afterwards, we kindly ask you for feedback.
Please fill in our Google form or text us directly on our social media channels.
By filling the form you can also suggest topics for our future YOTA online sessions.

Our second edition of YOTA online will take place on Thursday, 25.06.2020, at 1800 UTC. Therefore, save the date already. Our team is working on an interesting new main topic to be presented in the show. We will also answer YOTA community questions again. So, if you always wanted to ask a question regarding YOTA – this is your time! Let us know by contacting us on our social media channels or by email. In the end we prepared another prize draw for all participants. See you all next time!

Press Release by Youngsters On The Air
Friday, 22.05.2020

WHAT?
The Youth Working Group within the IARU Region 1 created a newly developed program called “YOTA online”. In these monthly gatherings we will try to bring the YOTA feeling towards the online community and spread the word that there is youth in hamradio. A YOTA team consisting of active youngsters will present different topics. While answering questions from the community there will be also a part where different recent YOTA events will be described and participant stories will be shared followed by a Q&A session with the presenters. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle amongst all participants.

WHY?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all planned YOTA events until September 2020 had to be cancelled or postponed. This included for example the Summer Camps in all IARU Regions 1, 2 and 3 as well as Subregional Camps, Youth Contest Programs, or our presence during the HAMRADIO fair 2020 in Friedrichshafen. This and the fact that lots of youngsters want to join YOTA activities each year lend us to create an interactive format to gather youngsters online on a regular basis.

WHERE?
The first meeting will take place on 28th May 2020 from 1800 UTC as a livestream and will take around one hour. Of course, the participation is for free and open to anyone who wants to take part worldwide. We will share the link to our server one day prior to the event on our homepage and social media channels. The event will also be livestreamed to our Youtube Channel and will be recorded to be available online at any time.

We hope to have the chance to welcome you in a few days during our YOTA online meeting!

Postponed – YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2020

By | Publication, YOTA Croatia 2022 | No Comments

Unfortunately, due to the current development of COVID-19 the following decision has been made.

It has been decided that the 10th edition of Youngsters On The Air Summer Camp will not be held in 2020.
There is luckily a light at the end of the tunnel, which is called YOTA 2021.
We are very glad to announce that the croatian amateur radio societey (HRS) will postpone the event and organize YOTA 2021 in Croatia.

We are looking forward to this event – stay safe around the world!

Postponed – Region 2 Summer Camp 2020

By | Publication | No Comments

Press Release by YOTA Region 2:

“As of April 15, we have made the difficult and heartbreaking decision to postpone the Youth on the Air Camp until the summer of 2021.

As word of further restrictions and cancellations became public, the committee decided postponement was the best option given the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety and well-being of our campers, faculty, staff, and the public is our top priority. A postponement to July, 2020 was also considered.

The committee is planning for July, 2021 to host the postponed camp. Campers who were accepted to the 2020 camp will have the first chance at registering for the 2021 camp. The daily schedule and plan for the 2020 camp will be the same for the 2021 camp as much as possible apart from the dates. The committee found that July was a more accessible date for the widest range of campers to attend.

The committee is also looking at ideas for a shortened, virtual camp in the summer of 2020 so that campers can participate in limited activities from home. Details of the online “camp” information will be made available once the plan has been completed.

While many sponsors and donors have already expressed support for just keeping funds to use in 2021, refunds of donations made to the camp are being offered. Groups or individuals wishing to receive a refund should contact director Neil Rapp, WB9VPG at director@youthontheair.org.”

Cancelled – HAMRADIO + HAMCAMP Friedrichshafen 2020

By | HAMRADIO 2020, Publication | No Comments

DARC (German Amateur Radio Society) and the Messe Friedrichshafen just stated that the 2020 HAMRADIO exhibition and fair are cancelled due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
This also effects our YOTA booth, the Flag Ceremony, the annual International Youth Meeting as well as the HAMCAMP which is organized by the DARC Youth Department.

We are currently working on a proper solution to bring most of this stuff “On The Air” through other means – please stay tuned.

Please stay safe!
