On Tuesday we had our first day “outside of the camp”. We split up in two teams, one went to the Hohenwerfen Castle, while the other ones got to visit Eisriesenwelt. After the activities were over, everyone got in the bus and switched with the other team.
At Hohenwerfen castle we followed a guided tour, after which we were able to witnessed the birdshow. Of course, a few members were in charge of the COTA station. They were using OE2YOTA/P to activate the castle using both WCA (OE-00215) and COTA (OE-20215) references. During the COTA activation, the other team was bringing a visit to the biggest ice-caves of Austria. With 1400 stairs inside the caves, we walked 2km in tempratures of just below 0°C. Of course, to get to the caves, we had to use the cable car and walk for about 45 minutes to get there.

On Sunday June 17th, we had the famous International Evening. Every team brought some food and drinks from their home country for the others to taste. We planned this evening in the beginning of the week to “break the ice” for the youngsters so they get to know eachother even better. Want to know what an International Evening looks like? On Monday we learned about HAMNET and saw how to set up 5GHz links together with Kurt, OE1KBC. The 2nd activitiy for that day was a hands-on lecture on APRS, while some others finished their WSPR boards. Another great day here in Austria!

On the 2nd day of YOTA Austria, we made some antenna’s, had fun with WSPR beacons and of course the international evening (which will get its own newsflash later this week).

The first Meteor Scatter QSO from the OE2YOTA station has been made and confirmed! G4SWX from England was kind enough to mail us his eQSL yesterday evening.

The Austrian Team will be creating a newsflash video every day during the YOTA Camp in Austria. Here’s a little teaser of what’s to come. Stay tuned for more!

This Saturday, 16th of July, already the 6th edition of Youngsters On The Air will take place. Over 100 youngsters from 30 member societies, including an IARU Region 2 team from USA, will travel to Wagrain in the Austrian mountains.
This edition will be organized by OeVSV which is proudly celebrating their 90th anniversary.
The youngsters will be having a lot of fun with amateur radio, there will be many workshops, they will be optimizing their skills in electronics and contesting and will make new international friends. To name some activities from the exciting program: SOTA, COTA, propagation in an ice cave, homebrew HF antenna and using the same antenna in the mountains as a SOTA station, HAMNET, working with a Raspberry Pi and making a WSPR beacon out of this or use it with DV4mini for digital voice and the famous intercultural evening where everyone brings food and drinks from their home country. On Monday 10:25 UTC there will even be a telebridge ARISS contact with astronaut Jeff Williams KD5TVQ, which will give the youth an unforgettable experience. All this is only a small selection of the program.
