Press Release by Youngsters On The Air
Thursday, 31.12.2020

Twice a year, ARRL – the American Radio Society – offers an event designed to promote Amateur Radio to the youth as well as share excitement with your family, grandkids, friends, scouts or even to the public. This day can be the first time for youth to experience a real radio QSO, hopefully they get interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator.
You could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location, and favorite color.
Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day”.

When you want to participate in IARU R1 we suggest you to use the following frequencies:

10 Meters: 28.350 to 28.400 MHz
15 Meters: 21.360 to 21.400 MHz
20 Meters: 14.270 to 14.300 MHz
40 Meters: 7.080 to 7.120 MHz
80 Meters: 3.650 to 3.750 MHz

For more information please visit our homepage at https://www.ham-yota.com/kidsday-4-january-2020/.

Saturday, 2nd January 2021 will be the next Kids Day activity. Of course, this one will be a bit different than previous ones. Therefore, we recommend everyone to follow the COVID-19 guidelines in these difficult times. Nevertheless, if you are young, close to a radio and do have an amateur radio license, get on the air and share a picture of your activation via social media and tag @hamyota on Twitter and Facebook, @hamyota_official on Instagram or by email to pr@ham-yota.com until Tuesday, 5th January 2021 at 2359 UTC.

We will send out up to 5x original YOTA T-Shirts in the color you like to persons who shared the coolest Kids Day activity picture(s) with us! Check out our collection at http://www.ham-yota.com/shop/.

Please visit the ARRL homepage for participation awards and further information useful during the upcoming Kids Day activity at http://www.arrl.org/kids-day.

Let us hope we can show Amateur Radio to our friends, family, and other kids during next Kids Day activity again!

December YOTA Month Awards and Plaques

By | Publication, YOTA Month 2020 | No Comments

The December YOTA Month team is pleased to announce a few things:

We are able to provide awards for ham radio operators as well as SWLs from now on.
While nothing has changed for the on air contacts between YOTA special event stations and radio operators, SWLs can log their heard QSOs directly on our event website.
SWLs have to register themselves on our website to be able to obtain their awards. If you don’t have an official SWL callsign yet – no worries!
You can also use your nickname to obtain the awards in bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

Furthermore, SWLs can request QSL cards on our website soon as well.
You will have to enter the heard QSO data to a form and we will be happy to provide you a card as requested.
To get the requested card(s) you have to have your own SWL callsign and be a member of a national society and its QSL service, though.

Moreover, we are offering 7 different wooden plaques after the DYM activity in the following categories:

  • Most stations contacted (CW)
First to contact the most unique active YOTA stations in CW mode within the award program
  • Most stations contacted (SSB)
First to contact the most unique active YOTA stations in SSB mode within the award program
  • Most stations contacted (DIGITAL)
First to contact the most unique active YOTA stations in DIGITAL modes within the award program
  • Most stations contacted
First to contact the most unique active YOTA stations overall within the award program
  • Best overall score OM
Best overall achieved award score by an OM
  • Best overall score YL
Best overall achieved award score by a YL
  • Best overall score Youngster
Best overall achieved award score by a Youngster (< 26)

Only one plaque will be awarded per entry.
A station winning a plaque will not be considered for a sub-area award; the plaque will be awarded to the runner-up in that area.

Example:
If you are the station who contacted the most stations overall, you cannot be considered for most stations contacted (CW, SSB, DIGITAL) as well as best overall scores anymore.
This applies to all categories.

The DYM team will announce the winners based on the award calculation on the YOTA Social Media Channels as well as contact them via their email address (as on QRZ.com) after January 20th 2021.
If there is no response by the winning ham within 7 days after the announcement, we will shift the plaque to the runner-up in that area due to missing shipping details.

Enjoy the last week of DYM 2020 and get those YOTA stations into your logbook!

December YOTA Month activity – DYM 2020

By | Publication, YOTA Month 2020 | 2 Comments

The entire month of December, several youngsters under the age of 26 will become active with YOTA as suffix in the callsign. The idea behind this is to show the amateur radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham radio waves.

Usually you hear YOTA stations on air from our summer and subregional camps throughout the year. This season has been an exception. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all our camps and events had to be cancelled. Therefore, nearly no possibilities were left to hear YOTA stations on the bands.

Hence, we as Team YOTA want to show the world that the youngsters still want and can be active on the bands during this difficult time. Help your local youngsters to get on the air throughout the December YOTA Month following your national health guidelines. Either you are a supporting elmer or under 26 years yourself, contact your society’s youth coordinator to be active with your national YOTA callsign. If your society did not apply for one yet, feel free to encourage them to do so of course. It will be a pleasure to work a lot of new youngsters on the bands!

Every ham radio operator can support the youth worldwide! By making a QSO with them, they can improve their skills on air and learn more about geography and ham radio abbreviations among others. The youngsters will be happy to get some attention and exchange information. Licensed and unlicensed youth will be making QSOs, be aware this could be their first radio contact ever and give them a chance to experience a possible new hobby.

As every year, there is again an award program available. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award for free. This program promotes the radio activity on the air waves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Visit our website events.ham-yota.com for more information about the award rules.

Last year we had high hopes with the QSO goal of 100.000 QSOs. With the help of youngsters within amateur radio, we absolutely crushed the goal with nearly 130.000 QSOs achieved by 47 stations. This year we are aiming for the same target. So, participate in December YOTA Month, and help us to achieve this goal again in December 2020!

Feel free to follow the activities on our homepage as well as on our social media channels @hamyota and @hamyota_official and update yourself at www.events.ham-yota.com.

Changes within IARU Region 1 Youth WG – VGC 2020

By | Publication | 2 Comments

Press Release by IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group
Friday, 16.10.2020

Changes within IARU Region 1 Youth WG
after Virtual General Conference 2020

Due to current COVID-19 regulations the original plan to hold the 25th IARU Region 1 General Conference as an in-person event in Novi Sad, Serbia, had to be cancelled. The organizing committee of the national society SRS, together with IARU R1, set up a Virtual General Conference (VGC) instead. Within this conference the Youth Working Group had the opportunity to present their achievements over the past three years on a separate session on Sunday 11 October. Over 30 Member Societies and 85 participants of all three IARU regions took part. Next to presenting the Youth WG activities there was an interactive session which included five questions. The outcome will be used with shaping the program for the next years.
During two more C3 meetings this week the Youth WG also had the chance to state recommendations which have been voted on today.

The Youth WG proposed the following three recommendations to the IARU Region 1 plenary:

  • Member Societies invite young non-members to their national and local youth amateur radio events in order to attract newcomers to amateur radio and possible new members for the Member Society.
  • Member Societies that do not yet have a Youth Coordinator are urged to appoint a Youth Coordinator before the end of Q1 2021.
  • Appoint Philipp Springer (DK6SP) as Youth WG Chair for the next three-year period.

All three recommendations have been approved and voted in favor of the Youth Working Group by the attending Member Societies.

Lisa Leenders (PA2LS) decided to step down as Youth WG Chair and hand the job over to the next generation. She received appreciation for her outstanding job over the past 9 years from all three IARU regions in the final plenary today.

Therefore, there was the opportunity for the younger generation to take over the vacancies. Philipp Springer (DK6SP) has been elected by the attending Member Societies to follow within Lisa’s footsteps as Youth WG Chair. Furthermore, Markus Großer (DL8GM) has been appointed as the Youth WG Vice Chair during the VGC.

Lisa expresses that she thanks the Youth WG, Youth Coordinators & Member Societies and IARU for all the work which has been achieved over the past 9 years. Only in 2011 the current Youth Program of IARU R1 has been started. She mentions that we can be proud on what has been achieved. One key comment she urges to Member Societies: “Keep it simple and start organizing amateur radio activities for young persons. Be open and listen to the young persons and do not be afraid to let them organize things. Please give them the support they need.”

The Youth Working Group will be in the right hands with Philipp DK6SP as successor as Chair and Markus DL8GM as Vice-Chair.  This is supported by the entire Working Group. Congratulations to both Philipp DK6SP and Markus DL8GM, they have a great energetic team to work with in the upcoming 3 years, Lisa adds.

Both, Philipp and Markus, stated that they will be continuing the already well-known projects within the Working Group. Moreover, they will focus on even expanding the YOTA program itself, working together with the Member Societies of Region 1 to strengthen the youth activities and help the growth of similar projects in the other two regions.

JOTA JOTI – Jamborees On The Air / Internet Event 2020

By | Publication | No Comments

WHAT IS THE JAMBOREE-ON-THE-AIR (JOTA)?

The JOTA is an annual event in which Scouts and Guides all over the world connect with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. It’s the shear excitement of having a live conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide at some other place in the world that attracts so many young people to this event. JOTA is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared.

The use of amateur-radio techniques offers an extra educational dimension for Scouts. Many grasp the opportunity to discover the world of wireless radio techniques and electronics. Thousands of volunteer radio amateurs assist the Scouts over the JOTA weekend with their knowledge, equipment and enthusiasm.

WORLD SCOUT FREQUENCIES

Scout Frequencies are chosen in a segment where low-power, simple stations are transmitting. This allows Scouts to operate such stations from camp sites and still be able to communicate with others.
